Day 3 : A Day of Immersion & Photographing Timeless Varanasi

We begin the morning with a sip of Kullad Chai, a drink that connects you to the heart of India. Served in an unglazed clay cup, this traditional tea is infused with the earthy warmth of spices like cardamom, ginger, and cloves, offering not just a flavour, but a connection to ancient rituals. As we savour the rustic essence with breakfast, the first light of dawn washes over the Ganges, bathing the ghats in golden hues, marking the start of our immersive photography walk across all 84 ghats of Varanasi.

Each ghat holds its own history, significance, and unique atmosphere, weaving together the story of Varanasi—the world's oldest living city. Through our lenses, we will photograph the raw essence of this sacred land:

We will experience and photograph the sacred rituals of devotees taking holy dips and pilgrims submerging themselves in the Ganges, seeking spiritual purification. Along the riverbanks, musicians and artists fill the air with the melodies of classical instruments like the sitar and tabla, adding a rhythmic charm to the scene. Children play and bathe in the sacred waters, their laughter echoing with pure joy and spontaneity. Overhead, seagulls soar gracefully, their wings catching the soft morning light as they glide across the shimmering river. The ghats come alive with cows and goats wandering freely, embodying Varanasi’s spiritual and cultural essence, while dogs and monkeys interact playfully, adding a mischievous energy to the surroundings. In quiet corners, monks sit in deep meditation, embodying stillness and introspection, while sadhus draped in robes, their faces painted and adorned with beads, offer striking portraits of unwavering devotion. Amidst it all, pandits perform yajnas, sacred fire rituals that fill the air with the mesmerizing cadence of Vedic chants, completing this rich tapestry of life along the Ganges.Midway through our journey, we will have lunch and refresh ourselves with a butterfly pea flower drink, its striking blue hue offering a cool and revitalising pause.

Our exploration then leads us to Manikarnika Ghat, one of the most sacred places in Varanasi. Here, amid the eternal flames of the cremation grounds, we witness the profound rituals that define the city's deep spiritual core. A historian will guide us through the centuries-old traditions and beliefs surrounding moksha—liberation from the cycle of rebirth—offering a deeper understanding of this sacred rite. With utmost respect and special permission, we will document this moment, capturing the raw essence of Varanasi’s philosophy on life and death.

Next, we step into history at Guleria Kothi, the second-oldest palace in Varanasi, a breathtaking testament to the grandeur of the Maratha Dynasty. After a hearty lunch, we resume our photographic journey, capturing the life that unfolds across the ghats—boys flying kites, playing cricket, and engaging in traditional games like Gulli Danda and marble ball, while sadhus meditate under ancient trees and locals carry out their daily rituals along the riverbanks.

As the evening sets in, we take a raw hand-rickshaw ride through the narrow, bustling streets of Varanasi, a thrilling glimpse into the city's vibrant rhythm. Our journey culminates at the Ganga Aarti ceremony, a mesmerizing ritual where priests in traditional attire move in perfect harmony, their large brass lamps casting flickering flames over the sacred river. The rhythmic chants, the ringing of bells, and the scent of incense fill the air, creating a spectacle of devotion that leaves an indelible impression.

We conclude the day with an elegant fine dining experience at our five-star retreat, followed by a Q&A session, reflecting on the day’s experiences and the extraordinary stories captured through our lenses.

We will indulge in an opulent lunch, savoring flavors steeped in tradition, before taking time to recharge both ourselves and our equipment.

Returning to the Taj Ganges, Varanasi, we indulge in a fine dining lunch, followed by a restful afternoon. Later, we engage in a curated photo culling session, refining our best captures in preparation for the next day’s showcase.

As evening descends, we will experience an enchanting Kathak dance performance, a classical Indian dance form that beautifully narrates stories through rhythmic footwork and graceful expressions. Following this, we embark on a private boat ride along the Ganges, guided by our expert boatman and historian, who will share captivating folklore as we photograph the breathtaking beauty of Varanasi’s timeless ghats. We witness the solemn rituals at Manikarnika Ghat, where the sacred fire burns eternally, offering a deeply moving photographic and cultural experience.

We will capture the mystical flames and the silent intensity of the cremation rituals, the soft glow of floating diyas, and the striking silhouettes of ancient temples. Under the moonlight, the ghats come alive with the ethereal presence of late-night bathers and the flickering oil diyas (clay lamps), creating a scene of profound spirituality. We conclude with a wide-angle shot of Varanasi’s ghats bathed in the evening glow.

The day ends with a sumptuous dinner back at the Taj Ganges, as we reflect on the richness of our experiences and the visual stories we have gathered.
