We would love to know more about you! Who you are and where you're from? When did you start street photography?

First of all thank you so much PSP for giving me this amazing opportunity.  Hi I’m Cazerella, originate from Ireland and have lived in the Channel Islands and now reside in the beautiful south coast of Hampshire, New Forest UK.  In the photography world I am known as (monochrome) Insta Cazerella, the reality I am probably not so insta and more chaotic, quirky and disorganised Cazerella with a huge passion and eye for street photography.  My mum always said “my camera needs me more than I need my camera” – she is my total inspiration and why I have such a passion for the art of photography, as a child I will always remember my mum would never leave the house without her camera – at an early age it was the norm to see the world from perhaps a different perspective and to capture that moment that would pass us by.  In terms of technical photography vs creative eye I am definitely more of the latter and working on the former!

What inspired you to become a street photographer?

I am inspired by the raw, unfiltered nature of street photography.  Unlike other forms of photography, street photography thrives on unpredictability. The streets are constantly changing, and no two moments are ever the same. Capturing unscripted moments that can reflect the beauty, bold, emotional rhythm of everyday life.   I see the streets as an ever evolving stage with no script, full of character, spontaneity, candid moments/chaotic moments and pure stillness and I am always inspired to capture a snippet of those moments in time.  There is always an element of surprise to street photography and a thrill in capturing a candid moment that can never be replicated.

How would you describe your work in terms of style and/or approach?

My style and approach are characterised by my surrounding elements on the day, spontaneity, bold, emotions, contrasts, trusting my instincts and being ready for the unexpected.  I have a keen eye and seek to capture the soul of the streets, revealing the moment at the time, always being respectful.  Street photography is more than just taking pictures of people or places, it's about seeing, feeling, capturing a frozen moment that speaks of the emotions, interactions, and subtleties of everyday life. My goal is to capture these fleeting moments, transforming them into perhaps one day timeless pieces of art.

In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception people have about street photography?

I guess everyone has their own personal take on how they view street photography, in the world of creative arts there will always be misconceptions.   Street photography is a genre that captures the essence of human life and urban environments, capturing moments, telling a story, documenting gestures, interactions momentary habits.  It is often lauded for its raw and candid portrayal of everyday occurrences. However, despite its popularity, there is a slight misconception I guess that it is merely about taking random pictures of strangers on the streets. In reality it’s much more intentional, its about observing, timing, skill, and artistic approach.  It’s a form of art that perhaps can be misinterpreted at times.  I often get approached by people asking if I can take their photos, or how long have I being doing street photography, perhaps it is becoming less misconceived and I guess would differ depending on country/city/town.   As photographers we must navigate the delicate balance between artistic expression and respect for the individuals we photograph, which can vary significantly across different cultural contexts.

What are your favourite elements to capture in a street photograph? (light, colour, composition, human interaction, etc.)

Street Photography is so diverse and dynamic my favourite elements can differ on the day/scene and depends on my mindset and how I personally feel on the day.  I am drawn to the elements of  human emotions, the unposed moments, expressions, interactions, and emotions that all play a part on the street photography stage.  The elements of contrasts, reflections, motion, movements, solitary calmness, architecture, light, shade the list is endless, but for me personally it is the connection with myself, my camera and my surroundings on the day and the elements will flow or follow!  I don’t have a set street style as such and go with what feels right to me at the time.  I am a huge fan of art of all forms and street art and graffiti is certainly an element that brings me to another world, where you are capturing an ever changing environment with its own story told through art.

What is your take on social media influence on street photography?

Social media continues to evolve, offering new tools and possibilities for photographers, it has profoundly influenced street photography.

For me personally social media has been very positive, it has given me an incredible platform for exposure to a larger audience, to engage with likeminded photographers, along with the opportunity to share my craft/love of photography.  The introduction to PSP alone has given me so much support, confidence and networking with all levels of photographers, finding inspiration from diverse styles all around the world.  We exchange, observe, collab, mentor, constructively criticise and learn, which is all down to the platforms of Social Media.

I personally have lost my rhythm, confidence and belief in my abilities at times – you can fall in to the pits of comparing on SM and feeling a little fish in a big ocean.  However for me the networking and support through SM has helped me immensely grow in confidence, learn more and keep my true passion alive.  PSP has been super beneficial  to me on my photography journey not just as a platform but as valid support and advice along the way.  My view is to use social media as a tool without letting it dictate your creative process, or waste endless time scrolling when you could be out there doing/practicing what you love.  So I guess in essence there are big benefits to SM and some pitfalls.

I sincerely hope the interplay between social media and street photography will continue to redefine what it means to capture the spirit of the streets

Are your prints available for purchase? If so, where can art buyers and collectors contact you to purchase them?

I currently don’t have a published website, I have been very fortunate to have my prints purchased through people I have captured or through SM where an image of mine has resonated with them personally.  I am always open to any interested parties, but I don’t advertise or look for buyers.  I cover many genre’s in my chaotic Cazerella world from street, landscape, nature, architecture, corporate, portraits etc and whatever the audience, for me personally to have a print of mine in someone’s house/studio/office is an absolute privilege and honour and definitely something I will strive to deliver more in the future.

If anyone is interested in any of my prints I can be contacted via my Instagram account @insta_cazerella_pics.  Always grateful to those who show interest in my work and appreciate the art of photography.

What is your photography routine like? Do you photograph every day?

I would love to say I have a systematic routine, but I am chaotic Cazerella by name and nature and like street photography no two days are the same. I try and shoot as often as I possibly can and on the days that allow I can easily get lost in the world of street photography for many hours, letting unexpected moments find me and my keen eye!  I am also an avid fan of the great outdoors and fortunate to have the beautiful New Forest and South coast on my doorstep.  I try to shoot as often as possible and carry my camera with me (thanks mum!), may not always capture moments, but always observing and staying connected to my environment at the time.  No routine as such as that would be organised, but for me the best therapy losing yourself in the moments around you and if you are fortunate at the time capturing it perfectly.

What camera or mobile device do you use for photography? Do you shoot digitally, on film, or a mix of both?

A question that gets asked by many, I use to say all the gear and no idea, now it’s a case of endlessly learning with whatever equipment I use on the day.  I currently use my trusty Canon 5D Mark IV with numerous lenses, my little compact FujifilmX100v which is super for street photography and light to carry and not forgetting the reliable pocket device, my Iphone13.  I take the stance it’s the user not the equipment, we are the conductors and it really doesn’t matter what instrument you are using!!  I use to work with film but now it is all digital.

What challenges do you face when photographing on the street?

We can’t control the light, weather, or behaviour of people, so adapting quickly to the street photography stage can be challenging, and it’s absolutely okay to miss those moments, its all part of the journey.  I miss many moments because I am either elsewhere in my mind, or my settings are not right and the epic moment is just a blurred photo, every day is a challenge that’s the exciting inspiring part of street photography.  Challenges help me adjust my artistic approach, and like life you have highs and lows, good days, bad days.  The challenge sometimes is to just slow down, observe and soak up what the street has to offer and not worry too much about how many good pictures I captured.

Do you ever wonder what happens to the people in your photos?

One of the most rewarding aspects of street photography is the potential for connection. Sometimes, a photograph can bring you closer to your subjects, leading to meaningful interactions and shared stories. It is these connections that can transform a simple image into a powerful narrative, bridging the gap between strangers and fostering a sense of community.  I have made many connections and now long term friendships through my captured moments.

The curiosity of the lives I capture over time never truly fades.

What advice would you give to aspiring photographers?

Don’t overthink, the more you shoot the more you will discover.  Observe the world around you, be patient (something I am learning slowly!) embrace mistakes – perfection is so overrated and it’s the mistakes that make us better long term (or more prepared!).  As I have said before don’t fall in to the pitfall of comparisons (I have been guilty of this!), we all organically grow at our own pace, and no matter what the weather or circumstances always carry your camera, some of the best moments happen when you least expect it.  It’s okay to have days off, recharge the batteries!!!

Try different genres – the more you try the more you learn.  The camera is your instrument and you are the conductor get to know it inside out and for all types of scenarios.  I have recently joined a local camera club many of which are street photographers and a great way to share images and challenge yourself outside of your comfort zone.

Online is a huge resource for learning and inspiration, use it to your advantage.

Just be you, enjoy!!
